Ayah (Verse)

The smallest unit of the Qur'an is called ayah (verse). The total number of ayahs is 6236. An ayah can sometimes refer to one and sometimes to several different topics. Although these issues seem different, there are semantic relations between them. Sometimes a few consecutive ayahs form a meaningful whole. This collection of ayahs is about the same subject or was revealed upon the same event.
The ayahs are classified in different ways. The Qur'an itself has stated that some of the ayahs are muhkam (decisive) and some are mutashabih (allegorical). (Ali 'Imran, 3/7)The meanings of some ayahs are hidden in a way that requires explanation. However, for the most part, the meanings of the ayahs are clear without the need for any interpretation.
The ayahs revealed before the hegira were called Makki, and the ones after the hegira were called Madani. The same classification has been made regarding the surahs.
It is seen that some ayahs are repeated in the Qur'an. For example, an ayah“And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember? repeats in the surah four times. (Qamar, 54/17, 22, 32, 40)
