Salah while Traveling

Due to the mercy Allah (swt) feels for His servants, He granted certain conveniences in situations of hardship and difficulty.  Travelling is one of those situations where Allah (swt) has granted such conveniences.  In religious literature, a traveler is anyone who travels to a place 90 kilometers or further and intends to stay there less than 15 days; he may make use of these conveniences. If a traveler intends to reside 15 days or longer in a certain place, he will be considered a resident and will not be able to benefit from the conveniences.
Travelers shorten their four-rak’ah ritual prayers and perform it as two rak’ahs.  They may perform masah over their leather socks for 72 hours as long as they do not take them off. Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an “And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer, [especially] if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt [or attack] you.”  (Nisa, 4/101) According to the majority of the scholars, one of the conveniences for travelers is to join the noon and afternoon prayer together, and the evening and night prayer together and perform them in either one of their own prescribed times.
