They Have No Gender
Almighty Allah (swt) has created humans, plants and some other creatures in pairs. However, it is not possible to make the same evaluations about angels. Still, in Judaism, angels are referred to as the "sons of Allah". On the other hand, there is no information in Christianity about the gender of the angels.(“Melek”, DİA, XXIX, 37-39)
There is no information in the Qur'an that mentions whether angels are male or female. However, there are many verses about the fact that angels are not "female". Because in the early periods of Islam, the polytheists of Mecca claimed that the angels were female and therefore "daughters of Allah". However, in the verses, this issue was clearly rejected and the claimants were severely condemned: "And they have made the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, females. "Did they witness their creation? heir testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.” (Zukhruf, 43/19)
The polytheists were proud of having a son, but when they had daughters, they blushed with anger and embarrassment, hid from the people, and even buried her alive. (Nahl, 16/57-58) However, when it comes to Almighty Allah (swt), they would not hesitate to attribute a daughter to him. In other words, they regarded angels as "daughters of Allah". These distorted and deviant beliefs of the polytheists are criticized in the Qur'an as follows: Then, has your Lord chosen you for [having] sons and taken from among the angels daughters? Indeed, you say a grave saying.” (Isra, 17/40) On the other hand, when Prophet Muhammad (saw) conquered Mecca and entered the Kaaba, He saw that angels were drawn on the walls in the form of females and had them erased.
As seen above, the Qur'an cleatly rejects the fact that angels are female. However, there is no information in the verses that they are male. Therefore, it is wrong to describe them with masculinity. There is neither aqli (intellectual) nor naqli evidence regarding the masculine or feminine qualities of angels.
