From The Farewell Sermon:
“All praise and gratitude is to Allah.” We praise Him, seek His help, seek His forgiveness and turn towards Him. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our egos and sinful behaviors. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (s.a.w) is His servant and messenger.
O servants of Allah! I enjoin you to fear Allah and to obey and submit to Him. And thus I start my words with the most beneficent thing.
O people! Heed my words. I dont know, maybe after this year we may depart forever from this world.
O people! Just like the blessed day (The Day of Arafah), like the blessed month (Dhu al-Hijjah), like the blessed city (Mecca): your lives, property and chastity are just as blessed and inviolable; protected from any attack.
My companions! Tomorrow you will meet your Lord and you will be held accountable for all that you have done today.
My companions! Borrowed items must be returned to their owner. Items taken for use should also be returned to their owners. Debts must be paid. The guarantor who undertakes a debt of someone must also pay the debt. Whoever has has something left in trust to him should return it to its owner. Fear Allah, your Lord, and serve Him. Establish your prayers five times a day. Fast in the month of Ramadan, perform the hajj, and give the zakat (obligatory alms) of your goods with a good heart. Obey your rulers as long as they follow Allah’s divine book, and thus enter the paradise of your Lord.
My companions! All kinds of interest has been removed, it is beneath my feet. But the original debt must be returned. Neither oppress nor be oppressed. Usury is now prohibited by Allah’s command. All kinds of this ugly custom inherited from the period of ignorance is beneath my feet. The first interest removed by me will be the the interest of my uncle Abbas, son of Abdulmuttalib. All the blood feuds from the period of ignorance has been removed. The first blood feud that I abolished is the feud of Abdulmuttalib’s granddaughter, Rebia. Government duties related to the city of Mecca from the period of ignorance were abolished. The guardianship of the Kaaba (sidane) and the service of distributing water (siqaya) to the pilgrims are exempt from this.
O people! Today, the devil has lost his power to re-establish his reign in your lands forever. However, apart from the things I have forbidden, if you follow him in things that you deem small, it will please him. Avoid these to protect your religion.
O people! I advise you to respect the rights of women and to fear Allah in this regard. You took women as a trust from Allah, you made their decency halal (permissible) by making a promise in the name of Allah (marriage)! They have rights over you just as you have rights over women. Your right on women is that they should protect their chastity and that they should not let anyone you do not consent to (not let them trample your bed) without your permission. Women also have rights over you. It is your duty to provide them with food and clothing within reasonable and well-known measures. Treat women in the best way possible.
O true believers! Listen to my words closely and dont forget. A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim, and thus all Muslims are brothers. It is not halal to interfere with any right that belongs to your brother in faith. It is an exception if he has given it willingly.
My companions! Don’t torture yourself either! Your ego also has a right over you. Everyone is only responsible for their own crimes. Neither the father nor the son can be held responsible for one another’s crimes.
Never turn to old perversions after me and take each other’s heads off! I leave you such a thing that you will not go astray as you hold on to it tightly, that is the divine book of Allah. is the divine book of Allah, the holy Qur’an, and the sunnah of His Prophet. Let those who are here convey my testament to those who are not! It may be that the person who has been informed will understand better than the one who was here and he may preserves and live by it.
O people! Your have one lord and one ancestor. You all descended from Adam, and Adam was created from soil. The most respected and valuable of you In the presence of Allah is the one who knows his responsibilities best and has taqwa (deep respect towards Allah). The Arabs have no superiority over non-Arabs. And non-Arabs have no superiority over Arabs. Those with white skin have no superiority over people with black skin and the same goes for the other. Superiority is scaled only by the amount of respect you have for Allah.
After this The Prophet (s.a.w) said: You will be asked about me? how will you respond? The Companions said, “We bear witness that you conveyed the message of Allah, fulfilled your mission of prophethood, and gave us your will and advice.” The prophet Muhammed (s.a.w) pointing his index finger at the sky said: “Bear witness my lord! Bear witness my lord! Bear witness my lord!”
