Sunan al-Rawatib (Regular Sunnah Ritual Prayers)
The nafilah ritual prayers performed on a regular basis along with the five daily ritual prayers are called the "sunan al-rawatib". Two rak’ah before the fardh Morning Ritual Prayer; four rak’ah before and two after the fardh Noon Ritual Prayer; two rak’ah after the fardh Evening Ritual Prayer, and two rak’ah after the fardh Night Ritual Prayer are called “muakkadah”, emphasized sunnah prayers which the Prophet Muhammad (saw) rarely abandoned. (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, Salah, 189; Sunan Ibn Majah, Iqamah as-salawat, 100) Every person who performs twelve rak’ah of nafilah daily for the sake of Allah (swt) will have a house built by Him in Paradise. (Sahih Muslim, Musafirun, 103) The four rak’ah of sunnah prayer before the afternoon and night ritual prayers are “ghair-muakkadah”, non-emphasized prayers the Prophet (swt) performed occasionally.
