Tahiyyat al-Masjid (Ritual Prayer for Greeting the Mosque)
Tahiyyat al-masjid is a two-rak'ah ritual prayer performed to greet Allah (swt), the owner of these holy places, when entering a masjid or mosque. The Prophet (saw) encouraged Muslims to perform this ritual prayer by saying “When one of you enters a mosque, let him pray two rak’ah before sitting down” (Sahih Bukhari, Salah 60; Sahih Muslim, Musafirun 69). Although it is more virtuous to perform this ritual prayer before sitting in the mosque, it can also be performed by standing up again after sitting. If one enters the mosque several times a day, it is sufficient to perform it once. When the Friday khutbah is being given, one sits down without performing this ritual prayer and listens to the khutbah.
